The English Branch of the Wheelock Family name has been around in one form or another prior to William the Conqueror, There have been many notable persons throughout the centuries and will mention a few in these pages.

two of the most notable Wheelock’s from the 17th Century were:

Abraham Wheelock : Born 1593 Died 25th of September 1653 aged 60.

He was a Cambridge Professor from Trinity College in Arabic Studies and was Ordained as Minister in 1619. Second Cousin to Ralph Wheelock

Ralph Wheelock: Born in Shropshire 1600 Graduated from Clare College Cambridge University Ordained Minister in 1629. Migrate to the New England in 1637. Founder of Medfield Massachusetts. Most Wheelock’s of American origin come from this line. For more information go to

17th Century notables: Captain John Wheelock one of the last of the Abraham Line was Captain in the Royal Navy. He was Captain of HMS Pembroke (60 Guns) and HMS Sultan 74 Guns).

Peter Harold Wheelock graduate from Cambridge University. Captain:
(temporary Major) No. 45063 2nd Battalion King’s own Shropshire Light Infantry wounded on the 18th of July 1944 and died of wounds on the 21st July 1944. He received the Military Cross for actions taken in Manneville.

Irish history

The Irish Branch Branch of the Wheelock Family has been around from at least the late 1600’s, This is the first time the name appears in Ireland. is investigation is still ongoing and have not gotten very far.

The only notable Wheelock members from this branch that I have found is Edwin Wheelock son of Charles Wheelock who migrated to the United States. Became an Abolitionist and Educator in Texas and held many prominent roles. Please click on link to see his Biography

A distant Cousin of Edwin who also migrated to the US of A and not to be confused with his father who bears the same name is Charles Henry Wheelock who was President of the 1st Bank of New York the forerunner to CitiBank
